Kennett Area Weather Alert

By Battalion Chief Chris Plumley
February 5, 2014

Road Conditions in the Township and surrounding communities are slushy but improving. There is an increasing epidemic of trees and wires falling on all roads in Chester County. Reduce speed and stay alert for downed trees.

Also, a lot of you in Chester County are without power. As of 08:00 AM, it was close to 65,000 just in our county alone. PECO area-wide outages are above 300,000 and rising by the minute. Due to the magnitude of power issues, you are advised to take action and assume it could be out for days and not just hours. If you are in the dark, minimize opening the fridge. If you have a cooler, pack it with snow and if the outage is going to be long term, you can move the food to the cooler that and that will keep your food safe as long as there is snow to keep restocking. For frozen foods, put in a layer of snow, put the food in the cooler, and tightly pack more snow around the food items. Keep the cooler outside if at all possible and place heavy items on top to animal proof it.

For power outages, call PECO NOT 911.

If you see wires down, stay away from them at all times, especially in the wet conditions. If the power outages continue, we will post shelters once they are opened.

Lisa Moore
Kennett Township Manager

An update from PECO at 13:15 stated that 700,000 customers in Chester and Bucks county are currently out of power. Please be patient. PECO will respond ASAP. Please, if you see any scene's like that attached pictures, do get out and move the barriers to drive around. Road closures mean the road is in fact not safely passable. For your and our safety, please turn around and find an alternate route of travel.

Kennett Area's emergency shelter is Avongrove High School. The shelter is active and should remain open through the weekend.

Thanks, and be safe!
