The annual Kennett Run took place during the early morning hours on Saturday the 16th of May. This event has been a long standing tradition in Kennett Square since the charity event was founded by local organizations in 1989. The first ever run took place on April 21st, 1990 and it has been a big "to-do" in the community ever since. This year was no different with participation from approximately 3000 athletes. The events of the day included a Power Run, 10K run, 5K run, 5K Memorial walk, 1 mile Kids run, and a 1 mile Walk. All the events begin in the heart of Kennett Borough and venture through various parts of Kennett borough, Kennett Township and East Marlborough Township until making their way to the finish line lakeside in Anson B. Nixon Park. Immediately following the close of the events refreshments and activities took place in the park.
During the event emergency crews from various agencies played a key role in the success and safety of this event. State and Local municipality Police assisted with traffic control to ensure runners safety. Kennett Fire Company provided an Engine at the finish line to supply water to a shower for runners to cool down. Sky Flight Care was available in the park and gave tours of their air medical helicopter to members of the community. Emergency Medical Services included Ambulances from Kennett and Avondale, and a Mobile Intensive Care Units (MICU) from Longwood Fire Companies. There were a handful of patients evaluated throughout the incidents with no serious incidents. Thanks to the teamwork of the emergency services and the volunteers from the Kennett run this event was a huge success. Kennett Fire Company looks forward to continued participation in this event for years to come.
