By Ambulance Captain Matthew Eick
May 18, 2009

On May 18th 2009, Kennett Fire Co. was dispatched @ 10:50 hours to assist Avondale Fire Co. for a building fire at the Peebles Department Store, 350 Scarlett Rd in New Garden Township. Longwood Fire Co. and New Castle County Station 19 were also alerted. Caller reported a smoke condition inside the building, stated it smelled electrical and they were quickly evacuating all patrons and workers.

Chief 24 arrived on the scene with nothing showing on side A of the building, and continued to investigate. Engine Companies from 23, 24, and 25 investigated the smoke condition in the building with thermal imaging cameras.

Units on scene found nothing significant in the building and the determination was made that the cause was a HVAC unit on the roof. Crews from 24 and 25 went onto the roof and secured the power to the HVAC units.

Units were on scene working for 64 minutes. Fire crews returned to their stations and the incident was turned over to the building owner.

Units: Ambulance 24, Engine 24-2, Tower 24, Chief Melton

Mutual Aid: Avondale Fire Co., Longwood Fire Co., NCC Station 19.
