West Grove Fire Company was dispatched at 10:34 on April 10 in the area of Flint Hill Rd. for a brush fire. Initial report was a brush fire of about 2+ acres. The brush fire was quickly moving toward a nearby development, where the initial caller resided. The development chose to evacuate now before it was too late. West Grove units arrived on scene to confirm the report of a large, rapidly moving brush fire. Assistance was immediately called from Newark, Hockesson, Avondale, Oxford, Po-Mar-Lin, and Kennett Fire Companies. Initial crews did a great job with stopping the fire spread toward the development, and than to the rest of the area. Kennett arrived on scene with Brush 24 and crew for use of their off road capabilities in ensuring the perimeter was soaked. This is a normal action, especially on brush fires, to soak the perimeter down very well, both the burned and the non burned area to ensure the fire does not flare up again. The are has been in a fire warning because it has been so hot and dry recently. Cause of the fire is still under investigation by the fire marshals, nobody was injured during this incident.
It is important to remember, especially during a Red Flag Day (high fire risk due to hot and dry weather), to follow local regulations. This could mean anything from not throwing your lit cigarette out the window, to no controlled burns. Dry foliage lights quickly and can be very dangerous.
