Several members of the Avondale Methodist Church donning brightly colored safety vests, spent a sunny Saturday morning filling white trash bags with litter and debris. The members were paired off in groups and went to work along Baltimore Pike. They spent a majority of the day traveling by foot through Avondale and Toughkenamon as a volunteer clean up effort along the busy roadside. Deputy Chief Mitchell and his young helper Matthew lent a helping hand by loading up the full bags in the Deputy's pickup and dropping them off at a chosen destination. They'd obviously been hard at work for a while by the time I'd caught up to them. They were busy unloading more bags to the already large pile.
A few things became clearer to me that morning besides the spring weather; the generosity and hard work of the helpers and the fine job they all did. Show your appreciation to them if you see any of the church members or the Deputy Chief himself. We can also continue showing our gratitude throughout the year by putting our trash where it belongs. It's not just about keeping our roadsides clean, it can be a fire hazard too. One final note for our members, when Bubba says, "Pick up your trash!" I think he means it. The evidence here proves it.
